Total settlement area and part of the settlement area in relation to the total area - Flanders

Settlement area is defined here in terms of land use. Settelement area is the space occupy to live, work, relax and move around. This includes everything that seals the soil but also includes various forms of non-paved green space, such as gardens and parks or sports grounds and these are therefore not counted as open space. These indicators show the total settelement area expressed in m² and the part of the settlement area in relation to the total area per administrative entity (region, province, district and municipality) for Flanders.

Statement

The concept 'land use' refers to the actual use of land for well-defined human activities (such as housing, industry and services, recreation, etc.), for crops (such as arable, pasture, etc.) or by natural vegetation (such as forest, scrubland, etc.). In order to monitor land use in Flanders, we rely on the Land Use File, which is constructed from 18 different sources of spatial information available in Flanders. The land use file consists of 4 levels (level 1: land cover; level 2: urbanised land use; level 3: multifunctional land use; level 4: port sites and military domains). VITO has combined these 4 levels into one aggregated land use file. This file gives an overview of the actual land use for each 10x10m cell in Flanders and consists of 18 land use categories.
